Mobile World Capital Barcelona is an initiative designed to convert the city into a leader in the sphere of mobile technologies. In this pursuit it backs different programs and initiatives throughout the year to extend the use of these technologies into different fields, such as health, education, “smart life” and entrepreneurship.

One week a year the GSMA Mobile World Congress is held, when the whole world turns its eyes towards the city and the Foundation takes advantage of this, ratcheting up its regular schedule of activities in order to share with professionals, tourists and the public at large the full potential of mobile transformation. To this end it has scheduled a series of events that will expand the congress’s activity, being held at different sites around the city.

Mobile World Centre brings the congress closer to citizens

Coinciding with mobile technologies week, Mobile World Centre will showcase a selection of the main new developments to be presented during the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2015. Repeating for yet another year this initiative that debuted in 2014, MWCB and Telefónica will provide the public with a chance to access, live and at no charge, the latest releases from several major companies, including Samsung, Sony, Microsoft, LG, Huawei, Motorola, HTC, Alcatel and ZTE, which, in turn, will enjoy a representative role at the GSMA Mobile World Congress. For example, the latest device from HTC, a company whose HTC One device was named Mobile of the Year at the MWC14 Global Mobile Awards, will be featured from 2-5 March at this space.

Mobile World Centre will also be opening up the “Connected Beings” exhibit, a route featuring several installations providing visitors with an in-depth look at the value of shared information. This event supersedes the successful Music+Arts exhibit and will turn the Mobile World Centre into the capital of connected life, with an itinerary illustrating the different uses of the Internet of Things (IoT) applied to the day to day of people, companies, cities, homes and transport systems.

Health & Wellness, the mobile event for health professionals

Days 3 and 4 March the MWCB mHealth team will hold the only specific event on “mobile health” on the congress’s program: its “Health & Wellness” days. Speakers from around the world will gather on Tuesday the 3rd at the Mobile World Centre, and on Wednesday the 4th at the Mobile World Congress, at an event that will convene over 500 professionals from the health sector.

On Thursday the 5th, at the GSMA Mobile World Congress, the Foundation’s mHealth team will also offer the “Global mHealth Marketplace and Innovation” seminar, an overview of the latest developments in the health market.

Mobile Ready, ground-breaking smart experiences for travellers

Another of the Mobile World Capital Barcelona events scheduled during the congress is Mobile Ready, a project marking its second edition in 2015. Mobile Ready aims to present citizens with innovative mobile solutions in the smart world, this year with a greater focus on tourism. In this way an effort is made to support the creation of new mobile initiatives and encourage the adoption of mobile solutions by agents in the sector.

A digital retail experience using mobile devices at Terminal 1 of Barcelona-El Prat Airport, a 360º panoramic view of Barcelona from the terrace of the Hotel Royal using augmented reality glasses, choosing a menu with a digital table at the Hotel Condes de Barcelona, or discovering a smart room at the Hotel Eurostars BCN Design are just some of the experiences and activities offered by Mobile Ready.

From 27 February to 14 March all those interested in discovering the potential of mobile technologies in the tourism sector can visit these locations and personally see what services offered in the near future will be like.

In addition to events related to health, innovation and smart living, Mobile World Capital Barcelona continues to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the mobile sector through the consolidation of 4Years From Now (4YFN), and of mobile education, through the mSchools program. On 5 March, as part of the Mobile World Congress, mSchools will gather for the first time 500 representatives from Catalonian educational centres in order to analyse mobile technologies’ potential to contribute value to the educational field.

Barcelona is the world’s capital of mobile technologies, and during the week of 2 March citizens, tourists and mobile technology professionals will be able to experience this in person, whether they participate at the GSMA Mobile World Congress or not.
