In today’s world mobile technology seems to change every second. Our planet, now connected, has become a place where it is possible for anyone with enough persistence to launch an initiative from scratch and have a greater shot at success than ever before. In our globalised society information travels in real time and opportunities are within the reach of all those who strive to take advantage of them.

Such is the case with the nine companies that will travel to the Mobile World Congress Shanghai to form part of the business delegation organised by the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation in collaboration with ICEX, ACCIÓ and Barcelona Activa. Asia is a strategic continent in terms of development, innovation and growth, as well as a key agent in the international digital ecosystem.

Mobile World Capital Barcelona will be present for the first time at the replica of the mobile technology congress sponsored every year by GSMA on the Asian continent: in 2015, the former Mobile Asia Expo becomes the Mobile World Congress Shanghai. The congress, which in 2014 managed to draw over 25,000 attendees, prepares to welcome more than 250 stands of multinationals from 15-17 July: companies like Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, China Mobile, Huawei, Mozilla, Nokia and ZTE. There will also be a programme of talks featuring top-level speakers, major networking opportunities with high-level executives, as well as exhibition areas and pavilions dedicated to mGaming, iAccessories, devices and applications, among other things.

From 13-17 July Globalcomm, BIID Mobile ID, Accent Systems, M2M Cloud Factory, Cronos Group, Wave Control, RedBorder, Seeketing and Quobis – will have the opportunity to get to know Shanghai’s business community. During a first stage – on 13 and 14 July – the delegation will visit Shanghai’s most important companies and places of interest related to entrepreneurial activity in the tech sector, including technological parks, accelerators, and mobile phone industry companies. On 15 July, coinciding with the start of the congress, activity will move to the fairgrounds, where companies will have their own space at the MWCB Foundation’s stand.


The different programs backed by the MWCB Foundation will also be present at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai to exhibit the transformative potential of mobile technology in areas key to society, like entrepreneurship, education, health and connected living. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about initiatives like 4YFN, the international event for mobile startups organised by MWCB and GSMA, and mSchools, the pioneering programme promoting the use of mobile solutions in Catalonian classrooms.

As for mHealth, a team from the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation will also travel to Shanghai to participate in the Digital Health Summit (DHS2015), the specialised mobile health event backed by the European Connected Health Alliance (ECHAlliance) and the China Connected Health Alliance (CCHA), to be held in conjunction with the Mobile World Congress Shanghai. The purpose of the event is to address the challenges and the opportunities posed by eHealth and mHealth for the Chinese healthcare system, and analyse the benefits of the establishment of a comprehensive mobile health system in the country. With a view to encouraging interaction between European and Chinese agents in the health sector, the MWCB team, several Spanish companies and other members of the ECHAlliance will visit hospitals, industries and governmental organizations in the Chinese healthcare sphere.

The Digital Health Summit will feature remarks by Joan Cornet, director of MWCB’s mHealth programme, who will address the potential of mobile health in China and how the country must transform its healthcare model to provide for new mobile health solutions. As Cornet has explained: “China is an immense market offering great business opportunities in the area of mobile health because its public health system – currently lacking primary care or public coverage – is forced to undertake major changes. But it is also a challenging market for western entrepreneurs, due to the cultural barriers and their lack of knowledge regarding the actors in charge of healthcare services.” 

The talks at the Digital Health Summit round out the extensive programme of the Mobile World Congress Shanghai, an event that has become one of the most important of its kind in Asia.
