Sustainability, efficiency, quality of life. Concepts like these are regularly associated with an advanced society in which most processes have been automated, allowing people to enjoy their free time more. The fact that these processes are increasingly automatic is a result of technology’s evolution, but also of the creation of environments conducive to the discovery and encouragement of talent. Different entities and organisations undertaking initiatives related to entrepreneurship and innovation ultimately spawn the conception and development of innovative ideas, which are those that end up laying the foundations for the future.

Day after day we talk about incubators, accelerators, hackathons and different kinds of immersion programmes that help entrepreneurs and startups to promote their products. The international event for mobile startups, 4 Years From Now, is itself an example of this. Now 4YFN is teaming up with the technological multinational IBM to organise a global competition, the Global Mobile Innovators Tournament, in order to launch new tech startups onto the market.

This is an international competition in which entrepreneurs and startups develop an application based on 15 virtual challenges grouped in these three categories: Connected Homes and Buildings, Connected Travel & Transportation, and Smarter Healthcare. In other words, solutions based on the Internet of Things that make citizens’ lives easier in the domestic and professional spheres, when it comes to travelling, and in the health sector.

How does the Global Mobile Innovators Tournament work?

The IBM initiative is carried out in the following phases:

Registration: From 16 September to 4 November interested startups and developers can register at Global Mobile Innovators Tournament, choose a challenge and begin to work with IBM BlueMix, the IBM platform that allows you to create, develop and manage applications directly from the Cloud.

Announcement of semi-finalists: From 16-18 November 75 semi-finalists will be announced. They will have the chance to present their solutions on one of the 5 regional Demo Days that IBM holds around the world.

Demo Days: These events will be held between 9 December and 20 January in Bangalore, Los Angeles, Toronto, London and Amsterdam, with this competition yielding the finalists. These destinations will not be random, as participants are to select a site when they sign up on the platform.

Final: The tournament final will be held during the next edition of 4YFN, which will take place from 22-24 February 2016 in Barcelona, coinciding with the GSMA Mobile World Congress. During the three-day event the projects for each one of the three categories will be presented. The finalists will also have the opportunity to actively participate in 4YFN, where they will enjoy, among many other things, access to meetings with investors.

What additional advantages does Global Mobile Innovators Tournament offer?

All participants will benefit from discounts on admission to 4YFN in Barcelona, in addition to free access to the IBM Bluemix platform during their participation.

The competition’s finalists will receive four passes to 4YFN, accommodation for the duration of the event, round-trip tickets to Barcelona for up to two people per team, and the shared use of space to display their projects. The winners may also receive funding for the commercialisation of their applications.

IBM and 4YFN are offering people the opportunity to be part of creating tomorrow’s world.
