Fostering the creation of a digital ecosystem with transformational capacity and consolidating Barcelona as a reference in mobile transformation has always been one of Mobile World Capital Barcelona’s aims. Therefore, since its inception, the Foundation has promoted various programmes related to the main engines driving community development: education, health, entrepreneurship and innovation, and productive layers.
In its endeavour to generate the optimum conditions allowing companies and agents from a range of different fields to effect this transformation, Mobile World Capital Barcelona launches mVenturesBCN, an initiative to draw international talent and promote the creation of technology-based companies.
mVenturesBCN benefits from support by and collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, the City of Barcelona, the Regional Government of Catalonia, and the Fira de Barcelona convention facility. The project, which will be fully up and running in November, will be led by Aleix Valls, Director of MWCB’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, and head of 4 Years From Now, the business platform for the growing community of global technology startups.
mVenturesBCN centres its activities on two initiatives:
- The first and most immediate is the “Acceleration Programme”, focused on attracting three international programmes and seeing them established in Barcelona, where they are to accelerate 90 startups during the next 3 years. mVenturesBCN will create strategic business alliances – joint ventures – with each acceleration programme selected. Each new company will be based in Barcelona and invest and manage the development of a specific acceleration programme, backing up to 90 Spanish and international startups.
- mVentures will also work in concert with universities and research centres to convert technology assets into business realities. Through the “Technological Transfer Programme” mVenturesBCN will promote the creation of startups that generate new products and projects focused in research lines -algorithms, new devices, materials, etc- that could have a direct application in the markets.
The technological transfer programme forecasts the creation of 20 digitally-based companies, arising from the development of research lines at universities and R&D&I centres during the following 3 years. These advanced technology solutions will accelerate the transformation of current production models, thereby bolstering social development.
In short, the mVenturesBCN initiative strengthens the positions of Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain in terms of their capacity to attract talent and create opportunities. Thanks to mVenturesBCN, Barcelona will build upon its standing as one of the major digital business locations for entrepreneurs, startups and investors globally.
