Between 27th to 29th November, students at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), ESADE and Instituto Europeo di Design (IED) had the opportunity of creating their own startup. 4 Years From Now, the business platform for the international technology start-ups community, which is driven by Mobile World Capital Barcelona, organised a Startup Weekend specifically aimed at universities in Barcelona.
Promoting the values of entrepreneurship and innovation amongst students and the desire to increase its links with the working environment were the objectives that 4YFN established to shift the dynamic of the Startup Weekend to a new environment. So, on 27th November, students from the three universities met in the Media TIC building in Barcelona to develop startup projects in just 54 hours, passing through all of the development stages of a business idea based on-line.
Startup weekend: the mechanics
In this university edition of Startup weekend, students had to work in groups of three, one with development and programming knowledge (UPC profile), one who is an expert in business development (ESADE profile) and the third specialising in marketing and product development (IED profile).
On the same day, 33 students presented their ideas to the other participants in a “micro open” session. After voting for the best proposals, which ended up totalling 6, the young people selected in which project they would like to participate, forming work groups.
During the Saturday, the groups of students dedicated themselves to developing their chosen project. For this they had the help of specific training and advisory sessions given by mentors specialising in their field, such as María Santolaria, Head of Innovation of Banc Sabadell, Oscar Sala, from Digital Business Caixabank Lab, Emilio Avilés, entrepreneur and founder of Slashmobility, and David Pérez, co-founder of PopPlaces. On Sunday 29th, the final projects were presented before a board of judges formed of lecturers from the three universities and Mobile World Capital Barcelona.
In addition to the collaboration between Universita Politécnica de Catalunya, ESADE and Instituto Europeo di Design, the 4YFN Startup Weekend was also supported by platforms Startup Weekend and UP Global, both of which are driven by Google for Entrepreneurs.
