Shortly before the holding of the GSMA Mobile World Congress and 4 Years From Now (4YFN), registered companies and startups are already placing their finishing touches on the strategies that they will employ over the course of the hectic event; these strategies, to varying degrees, will mark watershed moments in their companies’ development.

We find a clear example of this in the history of Circular Devices, a technological startup bridging Finland and Spain that was created by Alejandro Santacreu and is renowned in the mobile sector for the development of its flagship product: the Puzzlephone. From an entrepreneurial family and with a background in electronics, in 2013 Alejandro left his home in Alicante and moved to Espoo, Finland, in order to study Facility Management at the Laurea University of Applied Sciences. After participating in an ideas contest, he went on to submit plans for a project he had been working on for months: the production of a reliable, expandable, repairable and environmentally sound modular telephone.

When Alejandro Santacreu participated in the first edition of 4YFN with the Finnish delegation, Circular Devices was not yet incorporated as a company. As Circular Devices’ Social Media & PR director Juan Díaz Díaz explains: “The event was key to the project, allowing us to enlist some of its founding members and to establish contacts that have facilitated the financing processes.”

What at that time was just a concept, today is a mature company with regards to its organisation and processes, a European enterprise featuring international capital and a multinational team that will be launching its product onto the market this year.

The Puzzlephone came about as a project that was about much more than computer engineering, coming to stand as a platform upholding values like freedom, personality, durability and savings, of both energy and funds.

A Puzzlephone device consists of 3 modules that can be customised and expanded to meet the user’s needs. This means that the same telephone can be so simple that an elderly person can use it, and sophisticated enough to satisfy a hardware developer. It is a versatile open-source telephone, designed to adapt to all kinds of software. Its modularity will make possible specific Puzzlephone configurations for a range of different uses.

The Puzzlephone is designed to last; if a given part breaks there is no need to acquire a whole new phone, as the part in question can be replaced. Circular Devices is a Finnish company with a European focus, from south to north and east to west. In addition to its headquarters in Espoo, it is present in Barcelona and has partners in Spain, Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The company, to be on hand at 4YFN in 2015, is without any doubt a model of innovation and progress in the mobile sector. On Monday 2 March, a day dedicated to the Disrupted by Mobile track, Circular Devices will be on stage to talk about the Circular Economy, its history as a company, and the importance of talent internationalisation and externalisation. On Tuesday 3 it will lead a workshop on Open Source, the Puzzlephone’s signature technology. Circular Devices is also one of the startups selected to participate in the final phase of the 4YFN Awards, the mobile startup competition held at the event.

Talks, workshops and recognitions for a company that is preparing to hit the market with a splash, altering users’ perceptions forever. The future begins with an idea: what could be better than participating in the world’s largest entrepreneurship and innovation event, making the future a reality today?
