Mobile technology, day and night: #MWC15 parallel activities

GSMA Mobile World Congress is an event that has a major impact on the city of Barcelona, and not just at the economic level, where it generates over 436 million euros and creates 12,672 jobs, but also socially: all week long it seems that something special fills the air around the congress. Languages and accents from around the world can be heard at an event centring around progress based on mobile technologies; a setting that, at the same time, favours the organisation of dozens of activities engaging professionals, journalists and citizens in the process.

Here we list for you a selection of activities running parallel to the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2015:

Sunday, 1 March

The day before the official inauguration there will be events at different sites around the city to get things started:

  • Mobile Sunday 2015:: industry executives, influencers, creators, developers, journalists and investors are invited to the old Damm beer factory for the first get-together prior to the congress. Beers, tapas and pitches to kick the week off right!
  • ShowStoppers @MWC2015: Are you afraid you will get lost amongst the thousands of options at #MWC15, and that your project will go overlooked? ShowStoppers gives you an opportunity to make contact with over 600 journalists the day before the congress begins.

Monday, 2 March

  • IoT Stars: The Agbar Tower will be converted into a venue for IoT project pitches on the afternoon of the first day of the congress.
  • Mobile Premier Awards 2015: the 9th edition of these awards granted by App Circus will be held as part of the GSMA Mobile World Congress. Startups, entrepreneurs and developers will come together at an event that will also include a live pitches contest.
  • MEF Connects MWC 2015: An after-party organized for registered MEF members at the incomparable Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). A legendary event on the first night of the congress that will gather over 650 mobile industry professionals from around the world.

Tuesday, 3 March

  • TechCrunch Mini Meetup & Startup Pitch-Off: from 8 pm-11 pm entrepreneurs and representatives from startups will have the opportunity to highlight, in just 60 seconds, their projects’ key characteristics before a panel made up of TechCrunch journalists and local investors. The goal: to win a chance to participate in industry events promoted by the famous tech magazine.
  • The Mobile Marketing Mixer: an open bar, buffet and music will wrap up the second day of the GSMA Mobile World Congress, at a celebration sure to deliver fun, entertainment and networking opportunities. From 8 pm on, at the historic headquarters of the Moritz beer factory.

  • Spain Today – A new vision of Spanish talent: an event organized by Marca España, from the Spanish government, will include a state of the art video-mapping. It will kick off at 8 pm and will run until 11 pm at the Port of Barcelona, near Columbus statue (lower part of Ramblas). The show will be performed again on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • Not a technological but a local culture event, Sant Medir, or the sweet party is a popular parade taking place in the neighbourhood of Gracia. A pillgrimage started on 1828 and it has become a parade with bands playing live and horses where tones of candies are delivered to kids. Starting at 8 pm near Lesseps metro station, it will last over one hour and finish by Diagonal metro.

Wednesday, 4 March

  • 4YFN Party: 4Years From Now (4YFN), the largest international entrepreneurship and innovation event of its kind, will hold its after-party at one of Barcelona’s most historic establishments: El Molino. From 8 pm to 3 am Golden Bananas, Delafé DJ and Mayor Punch will set the ideal tone to meet industry professionals, and maybe even close a deal or two. Tickets are still available.
  • Q&A with Mark Zuckerberg: at 18h in opera house Gran Teatre del Liceu, the founder of Facebook will offer a face to face to citizens and entrepreneurs wishing to ask him any question. Tickets are free but sold out, yet you can still apply here for the waiting list.

  • WIP Developer Smackdown Live: on the big day for top entrepreneurs WIP will also hold a key event. The signups for this activity, aimed at mobile developers, are still open. These discussions and question-and-answer sessions on issues of interest to the developer sector are slated for the afternoon of Wednesday, 4 March.
  • WebRTC Barcelona meetup: Are you interested in real time communication via web? Then this is your event, that will take place on the Poblenou campus of the Universidad Pompeu Fabra from 5 pm to 10 pm, and feature first line speakers such as Andreas Gal (CTO in Mozilla) or Douglas Tait (Director Telecoms Markets in Oracle), as well as several interesting startups.

Thursday, 5 March

The last day of the congress arrives and, with it, the final parallel activity

  • MLOVE Afterparty MWC 2015: The congress’s premier farewell party will be on the beach in 2015. the Carpe Diem Lounge Club (CDLC), at the Olympic Port, is the site selected for all attendees to wind down their journeys to the mecca of mobile technology.

In addition, from 2-5 March the GSMA Mobile World Congress will start up a new version of its Networking Gardens. As of 4:30 pm they will allow one to disconnect from the hubbub of the congress and close deals or devise new projects in a broad range of relaxed settings. This year, moreover, to commemorate the 10th edition of the MWC in the city, the Networking Gardens will be decorated to resemble Las Ramblas.

Barcelona is preparing to welcome one of the most important events of the year. Now it is time for attendees to open up their planners and organise their time to make their experiences as successful as they can be.
