Since the advent of the Internet, and due to the new browsing habits that have gradually been adopted, it has become inevitable that millions of Web users leave their digital fingerprints behind. Tastes, personality, friendships and daily habits; like it or not, the input registered over time produces what has become referred to as our “digital identity.” However, it often occurs that there is no official way to match that digital identity to the flesh and bone person in the physical world.

With the passage of time technology is providing solutions to fill that void, which closely impinges upon people’s security, until coming up with a failproof way to demonstrate the correspondence between the virtual person and the real one. In this context platforms like biid are created with a view to providing a mobile digital identity through an application that is safe and easy to use; biid functions based on a solid technology that guarantees that any transaction made via a mobile device is 100% secure and it is available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone.

At the mobile development level all sectors are growing, supplying the market with dozens of useful and practical solutions designed to make users’ lives easier. At this time people already have the necessary tools to access their medical records, campuses, university libraries, and to take care of all kinds of paperwork and procedures with the government, banks… and a long list of others. However, each one of these services has its specific code, at times long and confusing. Given this situation, the digital identification proposed by biid constitutes the ideal access mechanism to any of these services.

The City of Barcelona, in its constant quest for solutions to promote the use of mobile technology by its citizens, has been one of the first institutions to incorporate the biidTM platform into its services. Under the name Mobile Digital ID the citizens of Barcelona can find an application that will certify their digital identity to access all the services that the City has made available to them, such as paperwork at the Municipal Registry, the car tax, and towed vehicles, just to cite a few.

All users who have an iOS or Android device connected to the Internet will be able to request and use their mobileID digital identity, which they will manage through the biid-based application. Identification is carried out in a remote manner and, in short, makes it possible to match a telephone number with a digital identity.

In a second phase the City plans to offer the mobile digital identity service to both government bodies and private companies which, due to the nature of their business, need their users to be able to use it.

Barcelona, the world’s mobile capital, is the first city to employ an app like this one, which simplifies and streamlines digital identification. On 10 April the City of Barcelona will present the project at the Mobile World Centre in Plaça Catalunya.
