Internet of Things at home – security and control from anywhere

What things can be brought under control via a mobile application? Well almost everything. Thanks to advances in the Internet of Things, today we can control any part of our home via mobile devices. Questions such as “have I turned off the lights?”, “did I close the window?” disappear for good with these apps.

For example, it is possible to adjust the lighting of rooms and control its consumption. At the touch of a button which is connected to the Smartphone, you can turn lights on or off and adjust the brightness. Loxone is a free app that enables you to remotely control the lights in your home. But there’s more, a single click enables Loxone to also set certain lighting environments such as “Kitchen”, “Dinner”, or “Party”.

Similarly, it is possible to set the temperature of the house. A great application for this type of task is Tadoº. This app lets you check the temperature of the house at any time and change the settings from the Smartphone or tablet. Another app that offers similar features is Momit Smart Thermostat, an app that allows you to check the temperature and set the thermostat remotely according to the different time of the day.

One issue that has always concerned us the most is what can happen at home when we’re away, especially for long periods of time. Thanks to the Internet of Things and home automation, the user who has to be away can activate the alarm of their home. If the installed sensors detect an intrusion, an alert will be instantly sent to the mobile device. Additionally, you can program a simulated presence so it appears that there is someone in the house, by automatically turning lights on or off and opening and shutting blinds. Users have at their disposal apps such as Presence and Home Security Alarm which offer monitoring and alert services.

But security does not only involve unwanted intrusions, as sometimes accidents can occur due to electrical or hydraulic faults.  Through various smoke detectors and water and electrical sensors synchronised with these apps, a control and alert system is created. If a fault occurs, a message is sent to the person’s mobile. One app that offers this is Nexho. This application provides the user with different options that allow them to manage general electrical equipment. TaHoma Home Control is another option for controlling home security from anywhere; garage doors, skylights, entrance doors and other systems are under control for the user’s peace mind.

Even daily tasks such as watering the garden can be carried out automatically via applications, so you no longer have to ask a neighbour to water the plants whilst you’re on holiday. Thanks to home automation, through a weather programmer, the garden is cared for. An app that enables you to do this is Parrot Flower Power. This app is based on a system of alarms set by the user for different garden tasks and provides information about the condition of the plants. All this occurs via a Parrot branded sensor that you stick in a pot or vegetable garden and is connected to the Smartphone via Bluetooth.

It is not only plants that can be looked after, but also pets, even though their owners are not at home. Pintofeed is an app which enables you to feed your dogs and cats via a mobile phone; you only have to give the order and a feeder equipped with software will dispense the food. The ingredients, amounts and meal times can be controlled completely from the mobile device.

There are also more general purpose applications, such as See-home and Air Beam. These apps enable the user to see and hear what is going on in the house and offer the possibility of controlling the home automation system. What all these apps have in common is the fact that through a system of connected sensors and our mobile devices, we can control our homes from anywhere.

The conclusion is that it is now possible that the user can control their home anytime by being able to interact with the house’s system. From any location, the user can stop worrying about all the daily tasks and have peace of mind.
