During the mSchools Edu_Hack Session organised at Mobile World Congress 2017 attendees were able to gather in-depth knowledge of four pilot projects conceived during the first Edu_Hack co-creation workshop held at Mobile World Congress 2016. These projects cover a range of topics including: students with cognitive difficulties, gamification, social inclusion of the elderly and the current refugee situation. All aim to inspire teachers and encourage the integration of digital technology in the classroom.
With this event, mSchools Edu_Hack closed a process that began in February 2016 when more than 500 participants – teachers, university students and industry experts – gathered to design innovative educational experiences and tested their applications in the classroom. Over the past year, 50 Catalan education centres, 120 teachers and 1,700 students have implemented these educational experiences.
“Students with serious cognitive, communicative and/or interpersonal difficulties have overcome the digital and social divide. Their motivation has allowed them to take control of their learning,” states Prudens Martínez, a teacher at the Aigües de Mataró Special Education Centre and co-creator of the «SK2MT1 (Sóc com tu)» (“I’m like you”) project. This proposal applies augmented reality to show students from different backgrounds that new technologies can bring people together. “Boys and girls with different abilities have become partners in the same project,” confirms Martínez.
Another of the proposals presented during Mobile World Congress 2017 is «Minecraftegem un edifici singular» (“Minecrafting a unique building”), a teacher lead project from the Sant Gervasi School in Mollet del Vallès that uses gamification to reproduce a unique building close to their education centres. With the use of platforms such as Minecraft or Minetest, students learn to calculate areas, perimeters and volumes, contrast information, develop search strategies.
Focusing on inclusion of the elderly, the main objective of the project «Apadrinament digital» (“Digital Mentorship”) is to help the elderly discover and use digital tools that support mental agility and encourage social interaction.
The «Fotem el Camp!» ( “Refugees Flee”) experience takes a look at the challenges thousands of refugees experience when fleeing their countries. Primary education students from the “Nostra Llar School” in Sabadell put themselves in the shoes of refugees who must acquire new digital, mathematical, civic and linguistic skills.
These four educational experiences demonstrate how digital technology is becoming a cross-curricular tool for learning any set subject, as well as helping students acquire social and interpersonal skills.
