MWCapital connects with Panama

Posted on July 10, 2012

The goal of the Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) is to become an actual global initiative from the very beginning and to act as a real global hub of initiatives taking place all over the world, bringing them to Barcelona and launching them worldwide.

Just yesterday, we had a clear example of this global approach. After a first meeting between the MWCapital team and public administration representatives of Panama (an emerging economy really active in ICT development), the MWCapital and the National Government of Panama agreed to work on a Collaboration Protocol between them to be signed in the coming weeks –after closing in more detail the specific terms and topics to work together.

The Panamanian delegation included Mr Eduardo Jaén, General Administrator of the National Authority for Governmental Innovation, and Mr Temistocles Arjona, National Director for eGovernment and National Director for International Cooperation. From Mobile World Capital side, the representatives were Ginés Alarcón, Managing Director and Juan Manuel Barrionuevo, Strategy Director.

Representatives from the Panama Government

It might not be a widely known fact but Panama has made significant advances in ICT penetration and usage and it is not only the Latin American country with the highest penetration of smartphones but also the World Leader in Blackberry penetration per capita. With such impressive figures, Panama has the best base to explode now in the development and usage of mobile solutions.

Both parties exchanged information about the ongoing projects and identified several collaboration opportunities particularly among the Logistic and Financial Industries where Panama is a global leader. The Panamanian delegation was are also interested in participating actively in some of the MWC Competence Centers such as mWallet, mSmartCities or mContent.
