Promoting musical entrepreneurship: Primaverapro and Sónar+D 2015

In recent years the startup concept has spread geographically, and is no longer limited to the traditional innovation clusters of Silicon Valley and Boston. Knowledge has transcended borders and new technologies have made it more and more common to find new strategic locations for entrepreneurship. Barcelona is no exception to this new trend, where there are many events organised over the course of the year to promote innovation and nurture new startups.

The latest example is Primaverapro, the event for professionals by Primavera Sound that in 2015 marked its sixth edition, held from 27 to 31 May in parallel with the music festival. In addition to functioning as a forum for professionals from the music industry and addressing the main challenges that this industry faces, Primaverapro included the holding of Primaverapro Startups 2015, an initiative that seeks to draw music industry entrepreneurs, companies and investors to Barcelona to foment investment and generate synergies. One of the highlight activities on the schedule was the second edition of the contest to find the best ideas and startup projects focused on this sector.

The event’s final gala was held at the MACBA, where the winning projects were announced, which will receive consulting services and assistance in their searches for investors. In the first category, business ideas, the winner was Stampery, a startup that seeks to offer an online service to certify documents in a safe and easy way without the need to visit a notary. This service was created by Luis Cuende, previously named Europe’s top teenage hacker, along with Tommaso Prennushi, Daniele Levi and Néstor Palao.

Also of interest are the projects that were finalists in this first category:

  • Coverrme won the Hackathon Weekend organised in March by Seed&Click and Primaverapro at the Mobile World Centre. This is a tool that makes it possible to find versions of songs performed by other artists.
  • Hey Moth!, an app that is able to determine users’ musical tastes so as to recommend places and events in which they may be interested.
  • Open Beat, a platform that allows artists and users to upload their own songs.
  • Flits, a platform created in Hamburg to find musical events taking place in real time, providing information on the atmosphere through photos and streamed videos.

In the contest’s second category, business projects, the winner was Soundbetter. Created in the United States, it is a startup that functions as a market for the exchange and contracting of services for musicians. The finalist projects were:

  • Fluzo, a second screen technology that identifies audio-visual contents – live or recorded – and synchronizes them with one’s mobile, computer or tablet.
  • NeoScores, a Web application musicians can employ to safely download, use and share their sheet music.
  • Playmoss, a platform that allows users to create playlists combining tracks from YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud, and to decide who forms part of their network of musical influencers.
  • The Best Song, an app and webpage that is a kind of TripAdvisor for music, connecting different parties in the industry: fans, influencers, artists, record labels…

Primaverapro Startups 2015 is not the only event focusing on innovation and entrepreneurship taking place in Barcelona during these weeks. From 18-20 June, in parallel with the Sónar festival, Fira de Montjuïc will host Sónar+D, an international multi-disciplinary congress that will bring together experts from all over the world in order to fuse future initiatives and creative tools in the music industry and the fields of image, interactive contents, and transmedia platforms.

These are only two examples of the Barcelona’s burgeoning transformation into a meeting point for startups, as it establishes itself as a landmark city in the mobile technology sector.
