#SpinUOC, bolstering the bonds between universities, companies and society

Where do companies and institutions get new ideas for products and services? At times they come from internal processes, like the work of R&D teams. Other times, however, they come from external initiatives, parallel projects that periodically share with society the results of research carried out over time.

Such is the case with the Open University of Catalonia (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, UOC), which, through the #SpinUOC conference, makes available to companies and institutions the results of research carried out by the university’s personnel and students. The objective: for them to evaluate those results and adapt them to their organisations.

In 2015, the annual event dedicated to knowledge transfer celebrates its third edition. On 18 June, starting at 7 pm, 8 innovative projects will be presented at the Antigua Fábrica de Estrella Damm (old Estrella Damm brewery building), the proceedings being hosted by TV and radio presenter Óscar Dalmau. The 8 projects have been selected from amongst all the candidacies submitted at the beginning of the year. In addition, as it coincides with the University’s 20th anniversary, this edition of #SpinUOC will include interesting new features.

Unlike at the two first editions, in 2015 the 8 projects that will be featured have been selected by a committee of experts from both inside and outside the university. This year’s event, moreover, presided over by UOC Dean Dr. Josep Planell, includes two extra award categories in addition to the traditional Jury Award for the Best #SpinUOC: the Audience Award, to be decided by event attendees; and the UOC 20 Years Award for the project with the most potential from amongst all those submitted over the course of the three editions.

Like in past editions, the 8 members of the UOC whose project has been selected will present it employing the Japanese exhibition format of Pecha Kucha, which consists of showing 20 slides and explaining each in just 20 seconds. At this edition initiatives will be revealed in a broad range of areas, including education, health, smart cities and legality.

After the awards ceremony there will again be #SpinMeetings, brief networking sessions at which the representatives of companies and institutions will be able to meet with the speakers and find out more about those projects they found most interesting, in an informal atmosphere, to the tunes of live music.

4 Years From Now, Foment del Treball, Secartys and Estrella Damm cooperate on this conference designed to disseminate the knowledge generated by the Open University of Catalonia and share it with the business sector.
