Telcos join IBM and 4YFN’s Global Mobile Innovators Tournament

The Global Mobile Innovators Tournament poses 15 virtual challenges related to the Internet of Things for entrepreneurs and startups worldwide. The 15 challenges are grouped into the categories of Connected Homes and Buildings, Connected Travel and Transportation and Connected Medical Assistance. All those interested in participating can still sign up and start working on the challenge selected, using the IBM Bluemix platform for the creation, management and development of applications via the Cloud. The registration deadline is January 6.

Now, in addition, four major operators have joined the initiative: the American telecommunications operator AT&T , the UK’s Vodafone, Holland’s KPN and Canada’s Rogers Communications have opened their service APIs to promote the development of applications in a real environment. In this way all the registered participants will have the opportunity to not only use the powerful IBM development platform, but also, by using the APIs, to access to an environment to test their products and solutions.

600 sign-ups in 24 hours

The registration period for the competition, from September 16 to January 6, coincides with the time frame given the participants to develop their solutions in response to one of the challenges. After the registration period began, in just 24 hours 600 startups and developers from more than 24 countries signed up for the competition. As of today the Global Mobile Innovators Tournament lists more than 1,000 participants from around the world.

A judging panel composed of members of the four collaborating operators, along with professionals from the telecommunications sector, will be responsible for evaluating the projects entered. In mid-January the names of the 75 semi-finalists will be announced. They will have the opportunity to present their solutions at one of the 5 regional Demo Days that IBM will be holding around the world: Bangalore, Los Angeles, Toronto, London and Amsterdam are the cities selected to welcome the semi-finalists from the first round of the Global Mobile Innovators Tournament.

Each Demo Day will feature 15 participants vying in the competition’s three categories. Three projects will be selected at each of the semi-finals, one per category, which will go on to compete in the final, to be held in Barcelona during the 4YFN event, from 22 to 25 February.

In addition to completely free access to the IBM Bluemix platform and the operators’ APIs, the finalists will receive 4 passes to 4YFN 2016, accommodations for the duration of the event, the defrayal of travel expenses to Barcelona for up to two people, and access to shared space to display their projects at the event itself. The finalist team will also benefit from the support of one of the four operators, which shall serve as mentors and accompany the groups at the tournament’s world finals. Specifically, Vodafone will mentor the teams winning the semi-finals in Bangalore and London, AT&T will accompany the finalists in Los Angeles, Rogers Communications will assist the winners in Toronto, and KPN will support the three finalists from the Demo Day in Amsterdam.

From the finals at 4YFN to the development of winning apps

At the finals the 15 top teams competing will present their projects on 4YFN’s main stage. The panel – made up of investors, professionals from the telecommunications sector, and entrepreneurs – will be revealing the winner of each category, on site.

The tournament’s winners will join IBM’s Cloud Global Entrepreneur Program and will receive $120,000 in loans for the IBM Bluemix and IBM Cloud platforms. In addition, the top projects in each category will be able to market their applications in collaboration with the participating operators.

The first edition of #glovators is underway, and we will soon learn all about these products and solutions destined to revolutionise the use of objects as we know them.
