The Mobile World Capital Barcelona at the Formula 1™
Lewis Hamilton’s and Jenson Button’s vehicles will carry the image of Barcelona Mobile World
Capital at the Circuit de Catalunya
The Barcelona Mobile World Capital (MWC Barcelona) will be present at the Formula 1™ Grand
Prix, which is being held in Catalonia this weekend. The logo will adorn the sides of the two
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes vehicles and will coincide with the return to Europe of Formula
1™ and with the first grand prix on the worldwide calendar which is being held in Spain.
The agreement was announced this morning by Sònia Recasens, second deputy mayor of the
Barcelona City Council and secretary of the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation, and
Albert Buxadé, CEO of Vodafone in Catalonia.
Sònia Recasens said: “Our goal is for Barcelona, as capital of Catalonia, and its Metropolitan
Area, to become a new hub of economic development, based on a new highly competitive
productive model with excellent growth perspectives; a new model that will make Barcelona a
key player for economic growth and a launching pad for overcoming the crisis”.
“Barcelona’s status as Mobile World Capital, which will be promoted through the Mobile World
Capital Foundation, is a magnificent opportunity to show this model based on know-how,
technology, innovation and internationalisation. The Mobile World Capital Foundation’s
collaboration with Vodafone and the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team will put it in the
spotlight at a worldwide showcase and, at the same time, draw public attention. This will
connect MWC Barcelona to a very powerful brand in terms of innovation and technology and to
Formula 1™, which is where high-tech engineering is developed.
On behalf of the MWC Barcelona, Sònia Recasens, stated “For this reason, we appreciate the
fact that the Vodafone Group and the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team are advertising the
Mobile World Capital on its cars where millions of spectators will see the logo during the
Formula 1™ Grand Prix”.
The agreement between MWC Barcelona and Vodafone is another step towards reinforcing the
image of the city as Mobile World Capital among millions of spectators, who will follow the race
around the world. Formula 1™, which has an image closely associated with innovation and
technology, is an excellent platform to do so.
During his speech, Albert Buxadé highlighted this collaboration as a strategic bet to make
Barcelona a nerve centre of mobile technology and innovation, in a common effort made by
public and private institutions so that Catalonia can continue to be a driver of national economic
development thanks to its leading role as a global technological destination. Vodafone is
committed to the Generalitat’s development by providing technological innovations and it will be
in charge of offering mobile telecommunications services to visitors, citizens, companies and
institutions and, at the same time, developing services that will make visitors’ experiences
something unique and enriching.
Vodafone is the main sponsor and official partner of Mobile Solutions for the Vodafone McLaren
Mercedes. This is Vodafone’s largest global sponsorship and part of its commitment is to
continue with the Formula 1™ World Championship, a sport with worldwide media coverage and
a growing number of fans.
This is the sixth season that Vodafone has sponsored the McLaren Mercedes team. In addition to
traditional marketing initiatives, this sponsorship has enabled Vodafone and McLaren to
collaborate in the research and development of new technologies.
