More than 93,000 people visited the various facilities at the Mobile World Congress throughout the week, breaking all records previously set by the world’s leading event on mobile technology.

The GSMA, in its official closing note of the event, gave these numbers to show the sheer scope of the Mobile World Congress and its importance for the city of Barcelona:

  • 93,000 visitors from over 200 countries
  • 2,000 companies showcased their products and services
  • More than 100,000 square meters of space available for businesses and visitors
  • More than 3,800 journalists and industry analysts

The organization’s preliminary analyses suggest that the MWC’s impact on the local economy has amounted to over 436 million euros and created 12,675 part-time job positions; figurs that could increase in coming months. These numbers show just some of the many ways in which an event of this nature can have a positive impact.

“We are delighted with the records we’ve set this year,” said John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA. “It has been an event full of important product launches that consumers can already use or will be using in the foreseeable future. The industry has come a long way over the last decade and we look forward to seeing the changes that will occur over the next 10 years.”

Among the major events of this year’s congress, we found countless product launches (Huawei, Samsung, HTC) and keynotes of influential entrepreneurs and managers, such as Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Sundar Pichai (Google).

From delegations to local entrepreneurs

According to GSMA, more than 5,000 CEOs visited Barcelona during the week and 18% of the participants were women.

The Ministerial Programme also broke previous records, an area of MWC where 136 governments and 25 international organizations met, including 69 ministrers and 76 regulators from countries all over the globe.

4YFN, one of the most important events in Europe for startups, entrepreneurs and investors, was being held along with the Mobile World Congress throughout this week. It brought together more than 8,000 people from the industry at this year’s edition, thanks to its reduced pricing and its efficiency, connecting entrepreneurs and investors, as well as putting together tens of workshops and conferences aimed at entrepreneurs.

Both of these events will be held again in Barcelona next year from February 22 to February 25. So save the date in your calendar!
