The market for smartphone apps is gigantic; there are apps of all kinds. It’s a jungle that’s very difficult to navigate. The best known apps occupy the most prominent rankings in the recommendations of millions of users, while others may go unnoticed because they are for a more specific audience, however they can still make a huge profit. An example of the latter case are apps for people who are intolerant to gluten.
Celiac disease is a permanent intolerance to gluten that affects approximately 1% of the world population. Gluten is present in different cereals such as wheat, barley, rye, spelt, triticale and possibly oats and their derivatives.
The day-to-day life of people with celiac disease is not easy. Eating out can be a real headache, since gluten can be in any recipe, directly or indirectly. To improve their quality of life, there are several applications that offer information to people with celiac disease so they can know which restaurants or bars they can go to to sit down and eat with peace of mind, whether a certain dish contains gluten, or check prices — since gluten-free foods are often more expensive than other foods. Most apps are free, but there are also some that cost money, and most of them are available on the two most widespread platforms for iOS and Android. We’ll highlight a few for you below:
The first is Facemovil. This app is free for members of organizations that belong to FACE ( Federation of Celiac Associations in Spain). Users can instantly find restaurants that have gluten-free menus and outlets where they can purchase products without gluten. What’s more, the application provides a database that includes 14,531 products that are suitable for those with celiac disease, collected in the “List of Suitable Foods for Celiacs 2015” that is updated annually by FACE.

Another interesting application is CeliCity, one of the largest and most active gluten-free communities. The app is currently present in 14 countries. With it, users can find restaurants, cafes, small stores or supermarkets that offer some gluten-free option. The app uses GPS to locate the user’s position, and shows them the closest options on a map. Users can filter the results by price or customer reviews. This is also a collaborative application and, thanks to its users, everyday it offers more and better search results.
Mobiceliac is an application meant exclusively for those with celiac disease. To access its content one must be registered in a celiac association. It contains a listing of foods without gluten, a listing of restaurants and stores, and allows users to scan products to detect whether or not they contain gluten.
GlutenFreeList is another free app that offers info about products and manufacturers. It only shows foods approved by FACE and allows users to filter products, grouped by brands. The app is available at any moment, without needing an internet or even a mobile connection. A good solution for resolving doubts in inconvenient situations or places.
GlutenMed is an application developed for medical specialists and pharmacists. It offers its users a list of drugs that are not safe for people with celiac disease. The app indicates if a person can take a certain drug or not. A very useful app for pharmacists and doctors.
There are other applications with local character that fit the needs of specific markets. Glutenvrij is an app aimed at people with celiac disease who live in the Netherlands. Like MobiCeliac, the application uses the association of celiac patients as a resource for information in that country.

In the United States there is also Find me gluten free, an app that contains a list of American restaurants with gluten-free products and recipes. Like the others, this app also includes fast-food restaurants, pizzerias and bakeries. What’s more, users can check product prices, and can use a map to find the different locales.
Seriously good! Gluten free living is an application with more than 56 recipes for people who are intolerant to gluten. It also includes a 60-minute video demonstrating how to make various recipes.
In short, there are many apps to satisfy the demands of consumers from different nationalities and with specific needs. These apps are one more way of bringing mobility to an important groups like celiacs, and help them in their daily lives.
