Xavier Trias, mayor of Barcelona, Sònia Recasens, deputy mayor for the Economy, Business and Employment for the City of Barcelona, and Agustí Cord, executive vice-president of MWCB, presented mStartupBarcelona today, a new space in the city designed to attract the acceleration programs of leading international companies in the mobile sphere.

mStartupBarcelona, backed by the City of Barcelona through Barcelona Activa and Mobile World Capital Barcelona, aims to attract top acceleration programs and fortify the local ecosystem, so as to position Barcelona as an attractive location for startups, a reference point in the areas of innovation and technology, and to promote the creation and growth of mobile companies in the city.

The project’s presentation featured the presence of representatives from the first accelerators occupying the space. Angel García, representing Startupbootcamp, Simon Lee, for Gamebcn, and Ignacio de Pinedo, as the spokesman for Impact, were some of those participating in the act.

mStartupBarcelona: the programs

  • Startupbootcamp Internet of Things & Data: a new program by Startupbootcamp focused on the Internet of the Things and the management of the immense amounts of data generated by its massive deployment.
The program offers from three to six months of workspace, a capital of 15,000 euros per team, and 450,000 euros in services from collaborating companies and entities.
On Friday 21st the last Pitch Day was held, at which some of the startups that will form part of the program were selected and presented. The acceleration program begins on 9 January, 2015.
  • Game BCN: an incubation program that promotes the development of companies in the video games sector. Game BCN is a project backed by the corporate incubator Incubio, the Catalonian Regional Government’s Culture Ministry, and Caixa Capital Risc, La Caixa’s venture capital management wing, also featuring Barcelona Activa as a strategic partner, and Osborne Clarke as a sponsor.
The teams selected will be able to work at the Barcelona Growth Centre for four months, and will receive training and support from industry professionals. Game BCN already has 8 projects underway.
  • IMPACT: a mobile Internet project accelerator made up of ISDI, Buongiorno, Teknologiudviking ApS, Seaya Ventures and a network of renowned entrepreneurs and professionals from the European digital ecosystem.

This new facility, located on the second floor of the Barcelona Growth Centre, boasts 1,500 m² distributed in 18 modules of between 15 and 70 m², common spaces for the entrepreneurs on site, and a training room.
