Technology has revolutionized the way we approach education. It’s no longer about accumulating knowledge and solving tests, but about actual learning. And nowadays anyone from anywhere can learn anything thanks to digital learning. New technologies are meant to keep playing a major role in reframing our concept of education. To understand how the digital teaching and learning environment will look like in a few years, let’s take a look at some big trends that will shape it.

Bots, bots everywhere

They have already made their appearance in digital learning, it’s true, but predictions are set for bots to get ever more useful in guiding and motivating users, predicting needs, curating personalized content. They’ll be right there to serve up what you need before you know you need it.

More microlearning

Breaking up long, in-depth lessons into ever smaller, digestible chunks will still be a trend in digital learning. Bite-sized modules are perfect for keeping students engaged, and can be implemented as videos, small games, quizzes, infographics. The question will be how to contextualize them in a meaningful way.

Chat-based interfaces

We’ve seen the widespread adoption of short-form content, often delivered in the form of personalized interfaces. However, chatbots are being adopted by many large enterprises for various purposes, and the majority will from now on want to see chat-based interfaces and meaningful personalization in all learning content.

Virtual and augmented reality

There are still many organizations just beginning their digital learning journey, trying to make quick effective content on little budget. However, in the next years we’ll see a growing interest in using AR and VR to help students experience content. This will require, of course, investment.

Professional learning micro degrees

Platforms like Coursera and Udacity have already shifted their focus to providing professional micro degrees, ranging from cybersecurity to digital marketing. These are more convenient for those who consider a rapid career change without attending college.

These are just predictions. Either way, what it’s certain is that technology will require institutions and learners to adapt to newer methodologies. Are you ready for change?
