- The project has been possible because of the collaboration among Serunion, CISCO and Makenai
- It also has the support of Barcelona City Hall and the Regional Government of Catalonia
- Many of the people hospitalised are advanced in age and do not have devices with which to contact their families
Barcelona, 7 April 2020.- Covid-19 has prompted an unprecedented crisis in Europe. We at Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) wanted to collaborate by donating 40 tablets to Hospital de Sant Pau in order to help to overcome the emotional divides suffered by patients and their families because of isolation in hospital.
The purpose of the initiative, which has also involved Serunion, CISCO and Makenai, is to enable these Covid-19 patients under isolation with non-critical status to be in contact with their families via video conference. Many patients are older people who have no mobile telephone or the applications necessary for remote communication with their families.
Patients can therefore keep their families up-to-date with their evolution on a more continuous basis, given that visits are impossible. Patients’ families can meanwhile monitor how they are getting on from closer-up. Patients transferred from Sant Pau to hotels converted into hospitals and those who prior to being discharged need to communicate with their families may also make use of them.
The tablets have Webex connectivity software with an interface specially designed for this project by the companies CISCO and Makenai. Installation, maintenance and regulation of the devices will be managed by Hospital de Sant Pau’s technology services for better organisation and less intrusion into the hospital’s work. Internet connection will be through Hospital de Sant Pau’s wireless network.
The donation of the 40 tablets is for an unlimited period of time and as long as they are required. MWCapital, CISCO and Makenai will provide support for any connectivity problems that may arise with regard to the devices or the connectivity software.
The initiative is the result of joint work between MWCapital’s 5G department and Digital Future Society, the Foundation’s social innovation section. It also has the support of Barcelona City Hall and the Regional Government of Catalonia, through the Ministry of Digital Policy and Public Administration.
