The MWCB will be present in the industrial and creative area of Sonar: Sónar+D. This initiative is the combined effort of two organizations that see in mobility the future of music, art, and the creative industry. Mobile World Capital aims to bring in these changes and catalyse transformation through mobile solutions with a special focus on music and art. Mobile users have become a fundamental part of musical creation thanks to technology developed by people. Mobile devices provide users with creative and communicative possibilities previously only available to professionals. Through applications and a simple mobile device (there are more mobile devices in the world than the population), individuals have now power as never before: they can create, recommend, refer, and transform.
The presence of Mobile World Capital at Sónar+D will highlight the content, experiences, and initiatives that the mobile environment brings to music and artistic creation. The aim is to point out the immense opportunities that mobile solutions provide in creative and industrial areas, and to attract a greater number of initiatives and new opportunities for artists and fans in further editions.
The collaboration between Sónar and the Mobile World Capital is key to showcasing how music and creativity are essential to generate jobs, business opportunities and new business initiatives.
The Mobile World Centre, a new stage for Sónar
During Sónar+D attendees will enjoy performances, numerous concerts and DJ sets that include the use of mobile tools. Some of the contents of Sónar+D will be showcased beyond the festival at the Mobile World Centre (the first permanent space on mobile technology, located in Plaza Catalunya, Barcelona), which opened last February as part of Mobile World Capital Barcelona.
On Thursday, June 13th at 9 pm, coinciding with the opening day of Sónar, the Barcelona Laptop Orchestra will perform live at Mobile World Centre. The Barcelona Laptop Orchestra will explore the limits of the musical possibilities of laptops and iPads, the only instruments they use in their concerts. The Barcelona Laptop Orchestra will also showcase a workshop on its NetMusic application on 25th June at 8 pm, at the same location.
After Sónar, visitors will also be able to find at Mobile World Centre a selection of Sónar+D apps, enjoy the screening of a video of the best moments of Sónar+D and relax on a sofa with music recorded during the festival on the Sónar Village stage.
The presence of mobile technology at Sónar+D is rounded off with lectures, discussions, presentations, and the opportunity to meet with experts dealing with issues such as the future of music, the technological and market changes, and the role of music as a social integrator.
Neuroscience application development and remote DJ sessions
App Circus, the largest global showcase of mobile apps, will take place at Sónar+D. The App Bar App Circus will receive creators of the leading mobile applications for music, video, art, and games. Music Hack Day will allow live viewing of the development of around a hundred neuroscience applications. 100 participants will compete in a 24-hour hackathon to create applications that interact with physiological sensors to measure brain activity and turn it into sound.
Hackers will work with companies, start-ups, and educational institutions at the Market Lab, an open-door event that showcases ongoing research processes and projects. Some of the innovations presented include StreamingDjs.com, a service that allows live DJ performances via the Internet; Bhoreal, a control surface for musicians, DJs, and visual artists created in Barcelona, and Conductor, an iPad application that controls Ableton Live, the program of reference for music performance and production.
Market Lab will host collaborative musical creation demonstrations with mobile devices and workshops with 3D printers and the building of a synthesizer.
The American artist Chris Carlson is capable of creating countless new sounds from a pre-recorded sound with the movement of a single tablet. Beardyman, a renowned beatboxer, will also perform with the new Beardytron 5000 MK II, a custom-tailored device controlled by two iPads that expands vocal abilities.
Visual artists also show their connection with mobile technology in installations like Skrillex Variations, by Robert Sakrowski, a reflection on the YouTube era and the relationship between artists and fans, with a large screen that will show 16 different versions of “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” by Skrillex. Adrià Navarro‘s “Inkscapes” invites visitors to use tablets to draw and create visual and musical compositions simultaneously on a large screen.
