Barcelona has incorporated 7,423 new digital professionals in 2024, which represents an increase of 6%, according to data from the 7th edition of the Digital Talent Overview report, of Mobile World Capital Barcelona and presented today at a press conference. With these figures, the city reaches 129,608 ICT specialists, which already represents 6% of the workers in the Catalan capital.
The report states that new jobs in Barcelona’s ICT sector are growing six times faster than the city’s market as a whole, which registered an increase of 0.96% in 2024. Additionally, it is noted that a third of professionals originate from outside Catalonia, underscoring the city’s ability to attract talent.
According to, Francesc Fajula, CEO of Mobile World Capital Barcelona, “ICT professions have established themselves as a real economic and employment engine for Barcelona. With almost 130,000 digital professionals, the city reaffirms itself as a capital of talent, with a great capacity to generate and attract professionals from all over the world”.
Evolution of the demand for professionals
In terms of talent demand, the report indicates that in Barcelona, during 2024, a total of 35,008 offers aimed at ICT professionals were published, which represents a cumulative increase of more than 120% since 2018, when the study began.
Regarding market tension, which measures the number of professionals available per job offer, the report indicates a slight improvement compared to the previous year: the number of digital professionals per job offer increases to 14.8. Despite this, the indicator remains well below the rest of the sectors, where the number of professionals per offer is 67.3.
Sustainable Computing, Semiconductors, and 5G: Emerging Digital Professions
The report detects a strong growth in the demand for profiles associated with emerging technologies. Sustainable Computing (+166%), 5G (+80%) and quantum computing (+74%) top the list of disciplines with the most dynamism. Profiles such as Cloud (+21%) and Agile/Scrum (+24.5%) also stand out, as well as CRM and ERP consultants (+14.9%).
In terms of professionals available in the market, the emerging technologies with the greatest increase in talent are Sustainable Computing (+265%), New Space (67%) and Quantum Computing (+47%). On the other hand, more mature disciplines such as Blockchain, IoT or 3D Printing have suffered a slight setback.
The most common digital roles continue to be web developers, user experience and user interface (UX/UI) and mobile applications, with stable but high demand.
Wages grow by 1.7%
The average salary for digital professionals in Barcelona stood at €48,600 per year in 2024, with an increase of 1.7% compared to the previous year’s data. This value represents a cumulative increase of 44% since 2018, evidencing the strength and maturity of the sector.
Specialities such as Cybersecurity (€61,200), Artificial Intelligence (€57,500) and Cloud (€56,400) are the best paid, coinciding with those with the most pronounced shortage of talent.
More women in the sector
Female digital talent continues to grow and reaches 31.59% presence in Barcelona for the first time, exceeding the European average (30.64%) and the local record for 2023 (30.6%).
The disciplines with the highest female presence are Digital Marketing (53.9%), UX/UI (44.2%) and Sustainable Computing (41.7%), while Blockchain (23.7%) and Cybersecurity (20.3%) continue to be the areas with the lowest parity.
66% of ICT professionals work in other sectors
In this year’s edition, the report incorporates an X-ray of the presence of digital talent in all sectors. 66% of ICT professionals in Barcelona work outside the technology sector. Business services (10.6%), manufacturing (9.9%) and the consumer goods and services sector (4.95%) are the areas with the highest concentration of digital talent.
Along these lines, Jordi Arrufí, director of the Digital Talent area of Mobile World Capital Barcelona concludes that “these figures show that digitalisation is already a transversal asset to the entire economy: two out of three ICT professionals work outside the technology sector, which demonstrates the impact of digital talent in all productive areas.”
The commitment to training grows: 40,000 students in ICT degrees and vocational training
The Digital Talent Overview also focuses on the evolution of training. In the 2023-24 academic year, more than 21,500 students were enrolled in official ICT degrees in Catalonia. At the same time, vocational training in ICT fields registered a record 18,425 students, doubling in just eight years.
Vocational training studies have become a key way to generate new talent: in the last year alone, 3,960 students graduated and will join the digital market, almost half of them in microcomputer systems and networks.
