October 11, 2022.
Jordi Arrufí, director of Mobile World Capital Barcelona’s talent program Barcelona Digital Talent, Huawei Spain vice president Therese Jamaa, and Santa Clara Convent Foundation director Sister Lucía Caram opened this morning the ‘Full-stack Development’ professional reorientation training course aimed at vulnerable populations.
The project, which is part of the ‘Barcelona Inclusive Coding’ initiative, will see 33 people of 16 different nationalities trained under the guidance of the Santa Clara Convent. ‘Fullstack Development’ will last seven months and provide 850 hours of in-person classes featuring a wide array of content providing deep knowledge of Java, Javascript, Angular and React technologies among others. Furthermore, participants will also receive digital skills training aimed at developing cutting-edge digital technologies thanks to Huawei’s ‘ICT Academy‘.
Arrufí stated that “once again our Foundation engages with people at risk of exclusion. With this course, we hope to help this group enter the technology sector. It is a great opportunity that allows us to pursue our work of fostering talent training in order to match the most demanded digital skills of the market”.
The course comes as the first event after the collaboration agreement between Mobile World Capital Barcelona and Huawei was signed last February. The former aims at promoting intelligent communications related programs covering the Foundation’s areas of work.
In this context, Therese Jamaa, vice president of Huawei Spain, added that “this initiative reinforces the enormous potential of technology to achieve a more inclusive and equal world. We hope this to really boost the employment options of the attendees and thereby help their integration”
‘‘Barcelona Inclusive Coding’, an initiative to bridge the digital divide among vulnerable populations
Barcelona’s demand for digital talent has already exceeded the pre-pandemic figures, with an increase of 43% in 2022 compared to 2021. However, there’s a talent gap; taking into account that 26% of the Catalan population lives at risk of social exclusion, digital skills training “is more necessary than ever”, says Arrufí.
As a result, ‘BCN Inclusive Coding’ was born in 2021 with the aim of directing and expanding the scope of the above mentioned strategy. Promoted by Mobile World Capital Barcelona, Cruz Roja Catalunya, Factoría F5, MigraCode Barcelona, Fundació Intermedia, Open Cultural Center and the Esplai Foundation, BCN Inclusive Coding is a program which aims at easing access to specialized training programs. More than 30 technology companies with an interest in this kind of professionals are taking part in the program.
