Barcelona, 11 January 2019.– Eduard Martín has been appointed the new director of 5G at Mobile World Capital Barcelona and will coordinate both the 5G National Observatory and the 5G Barcelona initiative. The 5G National Observatory is jointly promoted with the Ministry of Economy and Business, through the Secretary of State’s Office for Digital Advancement and the public organisation Red.es, with a view to encouraging standardisation and innovation to share knowledge of 5G nationwide. 5G Barcelona, meanwhile, is promoted by the Regional Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Hall, Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation, i2CAT Foundation, the Telecommunications Technological Centre of Catalonia (CTTC), Atos and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), and is intended to convert Barcelona into Europe’s benchmark 5G technology hub.
Eduard Martín is a Computer Engineer, an IT Systems Technical Engineer from the Open University of Catalonia, with which he is an external collaborator, a Graduate in Information Technology from Cambridge (UCLES) and has a certificate in innovation management from the IESE. The new director of 5G has worked for Barcelona City Hall at the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Information Technology for over 25 years.
After completing his time at the council, he made initial contact with Sopra Steria, an international consultancy that focuses on digital transformation, where he held the position of strategic director for the public sector for slightly over a year, a post he has recently reassumed as director of Smart Cities and Strategy for the Public Sector in Spain. He is also dean of the Official Association of Computer Engineering of Catalonia and chairman of the Association of ICT Professionals of Catalonia.
