Galicia has positioned itself as a key region in the generation of deep tech spin-outs, according to the report “The Deep Tech Spin-out Ecosystem in Spain 2025“ produced by Mobile World Capital Barcelona. The study highlights the region’s role as one of the driving forces behind the incubation of companies originating from universities and research centres, with a total of 48 active spin-outs, representing 5.2% of the national total. These figures consolidate Galicia’s position as the sixth Spanish region in the incubation of such companies.
Galicia’s spin-out ecosystem generates 510 high-value jobs and an annual turnover exceeding €40 million. These companies specialise in strategic sectors such as Biotechnology, Information and Communication Technologies, Energy and Resources, and Health, reflecting the scientific and industrial strength of the region.
“Galicia demonstrates that collaboration between science and business is a reality. Our aim is to continue strengthening this connection, supporting leading institutions such as the University of Santiago de Compostela so that research talent is transformed into projects that generate economic and social value in key areas such as health, energy or ICT,” said Albert Mascarell, Director of Technology Transfer at Mobile World Capital Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Luis Otero, the Rector’s Delegate for Knowledge Transfer at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), highlighted the university’s exceptional position within Spain’s innovation and knowledge transfer ecosystem. He noted that “Santiago de Compostela, and Galicia as a whole, emerge as an ideal setting to host the presentation of MWCapital’s report, not only due to the USC’s significant contribution to the creation of deep tech companies, but also because of its ability to bring together science, talent, public institutions and the Galician productive fabric, positioning Galicia as a relevant node within Spain’s innovation network”.
At national level, the report reveals that the number of deep tech spin-outs has grown by 3.6% over the past year, reaching 1,007 active companies, with a combined turnover of €1.4 billion and 13,456 high-value jobs.
These figures were presented at an event organised by the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) together with Mobile World Capital Barcelona, through its The Collider programme, held at the Centre for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CiMUS).
The event included a round table featuring several spin-outs that exemplify Galicia’s ability to generate innovative solutions, such as Energhius, a company specialising in the design of advanced microelectronic circuits for energy harvesting, and Albor Biotech, which develops unique solutions to accelerate the development of innovative therapies targeting metabolic diseases. The Catalan spin-off Ephion Health also took part in the event, having developed an AI-based solution to create digital biomarkers for the objective and accurate monitoring of patients. This spin-out is part of The Collider programme, which promotes technology transfer by supporting scientific projects in their transition to the market.
