Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) and Generalitat de Catalunya have inaugurated this morning the exhibition Simbiòpolis, which brings to Palau Robert the technological experiences that were presented at the last edition of the MWC, focusing on Society 5.0 innovations. The exhibition can be visited free of charge until 31 August and reveals to citizens how technologies such as AI, robotics or supercomputing are integrated into our daily lives to improve people’s lives.
In addition to interacting with the innovations showcased during MWC25, visitors will discover artistic proposals that reflect on how these technologies address contemporary societal challenges, such as population aging, air quality, and responsible consumption models, among others.
Simbiòpolis‘ proposal will be completed with an agenda of activities that will take place at Palau Robert during the exhibition and that includes discussion tables, talks by experts and family workshops that will deal with the relationship between technology and society.
At the inauguration, the Mayor of Barcelona and President of Mobile World Capital, Jaume Collboni, highlighted that “Simbiòpolis shows the technology we believe in: a technology at the service of democracy and people”. The mayor also highlighted the will “for the city’s major fairs to generate a legacy”, which “the MWC has achieved in the last 20 years”. Linked to this anniversary, the mayor has advanced that next year a fan zone will be organized in Plaça de Catalunya open to citizens, “to celebrate the two decades of the congress in Barcelona and so that everyone can learn about the innovations it has brought throughout this time”.
The event, which was held to coincide with the meeting of the Board of Trustees of Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation, was also attended by the Minister of the Presidency of Generalitat de Catalunya, Albert Dalmau, who assured that the exhibition contributes to leaving a legacy in the form of “cultural and scientific reflection on who we are and what relationship we have with technology”. “It is an invitation to get to know the landscape itself and to enter into the contemporary debate on the link between society and the technological element, which strengthens us and at the same time presents us with challenges,” he said. Dalmau also highlighted the significance of this week’s decision on the airport expansion. “When we talk about a more connected country, we also mean mobility. We want to keep advancing toward the future and maintain our status as a growing nation connected to the world’s major decision-making centers. This brings value to sectors like science, festivals, and congresses,” he concluded.
For his part, the CEO of MWCapital, Francesc Fajula, remarked that “in addition to showing citizens the technologies presented at the MWC, with this exhibition we want to discover to society the potential that technologies such as AI, robotics or supercomputing have in the creation of more comfortable, inclusive and sustainable cities”.
The curator of the exhibition, Rosa Pera, pointed out that “Simbiòpolis is an ecosystem of ideas and experiences that invites us to think about new models of coexistence, in collaboration with everything that surrounds us: people, machines, nature and systems”.
During the inauguration, it was also announced that the agreement between MWCapital and Generalitat de Catalunya for the holding of exhibitions at Palau Robert to bring the innovations of the MWC closer to the public will be extended until 2028.
350 m2 of technologies developed in Barcelona
Simbiòpolis doubles the exhibition space of the first exhibition held by MWCapital at Palau Robert, during 2024, and displays in 350m2 experiences based on technologies developed and applied in Barcelona, which are the result of collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), CaixaBank, EIT Urban Mobility and Vueling.
These technological experiences are complemented by related artistic proposals, designed by the artists Agnese Lanza, Marc Vilanova, Margherita Landi, Mónica Rikic, Stanza and Thomas Thwaites.
The exhibition is divided into three stages that show the interrelationship of technology with cities, nature and people. It offers a perspective on how these elements can coexist and invites us to reflect on the evolution of society based on this interconnected and digital ecosystem.
The city of the future in harmony with technology
The first part of the itinerary revolves around mobility in cities. The experiences of this first stage explore challenges ranging from the problem of crowded environments in Barcelona, through an interactive map, to mobility management through the digital twin of the Catalan capital. Its artistic side aims to raise awareness about urban pollution with interactive installations and micro-films.
Technology and sustainability to face global challenges
The second stage of the journey states that technology not only encounters nature, but also cooperates in it. It offers the vision of a future in which technology, humans and nature are intertwined to address global challenges and promote a sustainable way of life. The experiences of the space allow the visitor to analyse the carbon footprint generated by their lifestyle and enjoy an immersive experience.
People at the heart of a technological and sustainable future
The final stretch of Simbiòpolis focuses on the person and their connection with nature and technology. It presents humans as active participants in a broader ecosystem, in dialogue with other species and flows. It explores the human relationship with technology through a robotic platform, a humanoid robot that interacts with visitors, and a learning metaverse.
