16/May/2025

Mobile World Capital Barcelona, in collaboration with Barcelona City Council, held the fourth edition of IT.nerary Day, an event designed to promote the incorporation of international talent into the city’s leading digital companies. The event connected more than 350 students from 70 different countries, currently pursuing master’s degrees, undergraduate studies, or other academic programs in the digital and technological fields in Barcelona, with around twenty companies based in the Catalan capital seeking to hire technology professionals specialized in areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software development, cloud computing, and data analytics.

In the morning, students participated in seven personalised itineraries tailored to their profiles and interests. These visits gave them first-hand insight into job opportunities and the challenges companies face when recruiting highly specialised digital talent that is difficult to find in the local job market.

The day concluded with a networking session at the Old Estrella Damm Factory, where students connected with recruiters from leading tech firms and explored new career opportunities.

The 19 companies participating in the fourth edition of IT.nerary Day were Allianz, AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, CaixaBank, Damm, Eurofirms, HP, IBM, Indra, Ingram, MediaMarkt, Nestlé, NTT Data, Ocado, PepsiCo, Salesforce, Sanofi, Schneider Electric, Vueling and Zurich. The international students came from more than fifty different universities and training centres.

Digital talent gap

IT.nerary Day arises in the context of the growing demand for digital talent in Barcelona. According to the latest edition of the Digital Talent Overview report, the city has 122,185 digital professionals, with a growth rate of over 10% per year in the incorporation of new specialists. However, the demand for profiles in cybersecurity, big data, and back-end development, among others, still far exceeds the available talent.

According to Jordi Arrufí, Director of the Digital Talent area at Mobile World Capital Barcelona, “initiatives like IT.nerary Day are essential to reducing the digital talent gap and consolidating Barcelona as a leading technological hub in Europe.”

Mario Rubert, Director of International Economic Promotion at Barcelona City Council, stated: “Barcelona is a diverse and open city, where 25% of the population was born outside of Spain and more than 300 languages are spoken. The City Council is fully aware of the value of international talent, which is why we have a comprehensive 360-degree plan for the retention, arrival, and integration of the international community. The website Barcelona International Welcome and the Barcelona Welcome Desk service are resources we offer to support international talent.”

Barcelona stands out for its international character: 27% of the digital talent working in the city comes from abroad. This talent not only strengthens the local ecosystem but also operates from Barcelona to provide digital services to companies and projects worldwide, positioning the city as a strategic global hub for innovation and technology.
