Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) has closed the call for entries for the second edition of the MWCapital Awards, receiving a total of 298 applications from 62 countries, with 65% of submissions coming from international initiatives. Organised in collaboration with GSMA Foundry, B Lab Spain, the Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, and Red.es, the awards and their international participation continue to expand with a 63% growth in countries in this second edition, highlighting the growing international drive behind technological solutions addressing major social and environmental challenges.

The proposals have been submitted across the different categories and reflect the diversity of actors driving innovation in the digital economy. Among the applications received, 59,4% correspond to startups, 13,8% to non-profit organisations, 9,4% to academic and research institutions, 7% to public institutions and 10,4% to companies, illustrating the broad range of organisations leveraging technology to generate positive impact. The strong participation further consolidates the MWCapital Awards in its second edition as a platform to showcase technology-driven solutions with environmental, social and governance dimensions.

The initiatives presented incorporate a wide range of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, advanced connectivity, data technologies, blockchain, IoT, and more. These technologies are applied to areas such as health, agriculture, urban management, climate change or digital inclusion, demonstrating their potential to accelerate progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contribute to a more responsible digital transition.

Following the closing of the call, the submitted projects will be evaluated by a panel of experts in technology, sustainability and innovation, who will assess the proposals based on criteria such as innovation, technological maturity, scalability and potential social and environmental impact. A total of 15 finalist projects, 3 per category, will be selected to advance to the final stage of the competition.

The six winning initiatives will be announced during the MWCapital Awards ceremony, which will take place in Barcelona on 18 June. Additionally, the project with the greatest potential of impact in Barcelona will receive up to €50,000 to pilot and implement the initiative in the city, contributing to position Barcelona as a global benchmark in the digital field.

As in the first edition, the ceremony will bring together representatives from the international technology and innovation ecosystem to recognise the projects that best demonstrate how digital technologies can contribute to building a more sustainable and inclusive future.

The MWCapital Awards are organised by Mobile World Capital Barcelona in collaboration with GSMA Foundry, B Lab Spain, the Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, and Red.es, reinforcing their shared commitment to promoting a responsible digital transition and highlights the role of technology as a lever for sustainability.
