Viridis wins “Hack The Planet”, MWCapital and DKV hackathon to find technological solutions applicable to environmental health

This morning was unveiled the winning team of the hackathon “Hack The Planet” a 5G innovation corridor organized by Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) and promoted by DKV and Garage Stories, which aims to explore the potential of new technologies to apply them to environmental action seeking to improve human and planetary health. The winning project was Viridis, an application created by Cindy Moncada, Andrea Amenta and Natalia Palacios. The team has devised a digital passport based on blockchain technology that rewards consumers with tokens for the purchase of sustainable products, helping green companies to generate brand value. The awards ceremony was attended by Carlos Grau, CEO of Mobile World Capital and Josep Santacreu, CEO of Grupo DKV.

To win the challenge, technologists and creatives from around the world worked in teams to develop an innovative proposal to answer the question: “How can we improve the health of human beings while taking better care of the planet? The Hackathon was launched last December and in these two months has attracted the interest of more than 200 participants from 22 countries. Between mentors and participants, more than 300 people have been involved and 37 new applications have been received to improve the health of the planet and take environmental action. The winner, VIDRIS, received €3,000 and the support of an expert mentor to complete the project. Carlos Grau, CEO of Mobile World Capital said “Sometimes, we don’t pay enough attention to how the environment impacts our health. Technologies such as 5G and augmented reality have a long way to go to offer new services and experiences in the field of environment or health. For this reason, from MWCapital we are committed to initiatives such as Hack the Planet to support ideas and projects that help improve people’s lives.”

Josep Santacreu, CEO of DKV pointed out that “we are promoting this hackathon because we are health and environmental activists and among our commitments to Planet Health, our strategy to curb climate change until 2030 is to support entrepreneurs and startups working on environmental health solutions.”

The Hackaton format was conducted virtually and at the same time, participants followed a series of sessions with experts in environmental action, design thinking, prototyping, storytelling and business modeling and received help from local and international mentors for the creation of their proposal.

DKV’s strategy against climate change

DKV, a health activist company, presented at the end of 2020 “Health Planet”, the company’s strategy to contribute to curb climate change until 2030. Some of the company’s commitments are to become the first climate-positive insurer in the country, to offset all the emissions generated by the company since its creation and to plant 1 million trees by 2030.

The insurer has been fighting climate change for more than 15 years: in 2004 it began to measure its emissions and take measures to mitigate their impact. As a result, it can currently boast of having reduced them by more than 90.65%, being ZeroCO2 in operational footprint since 2007 and having positioned itself as a positive footprint since 2019.

In addition, it has incorporated environmental discourse into its products and services, such as ecological home insurance and ecofuneral. Also, it has added the nature dose indicator in the Quiero cuidarme Más app and has presented 13 reports of the DKV Observatory of Health and Environment, has trained 397 children in the Plant for the Planet academies and has planted more than 50,000 trees since it started the first tree plantations with volunteer employees in 2013.

MWCapital’s bet on the hackathon format

MWCapital has previously organized other hackathons in the field of health and mobility. “Hack the Hospital”, held in collaboration with Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona, Boston Children Hospital and Garage Stories was one of them, focusing on 5G and extended reality to reduce the negative impact of long hospitalizations of adolescents.

The 5G Smart Railway hackathon aimed to find innovative 5G based ideas to improve rail transport. It consisted of two different stages: a program to technically prepare the teams on subjects related to Smart mobility and the hackathon itself where participants interacted in order to come up with ideas that could turn into pilot projects that would improve the railway field.
