Barcelona, 22 July 2021-. The Chairman of CaixaBank, José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, joined the board of trustees of Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the highest governing body of the organisation, in representation of the bank. Once on the board, Goirigolzarri met with Carlos Grau, CEO of MWCapital, to further strengthen their ties and to establish lines of collaboration between both organisations over the coming months. The meeting took place at the MWCapital offices located at Pier 01 of Tech Barcelona.

The agreement between CaixaBank and MWCapital, which was signed in July 2019 and will remain in force until 2024, is yet another example of the bank’s commitment to innovation and digital transformation. José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, Chairman of CaixaBank, underlined the fact that “we are experiencing a boom in social and economic digitisation right now and Mobile World Capital Barcelona is a key meeting point to head technological advances”. Goirigolzarri also said that “CaixaBank will continue to promote its work with MWCapital on developing innovative initiatives capable of taking on the major challenges of digital transformation”.

Carlos Grau, CEO of Mobile World Capital Barcelona, indicated that “CaixaBank joining the board of trustees of MWCapital has enabled us to expand the legacy of the foundation”. After this initial meeting, “we will particularly address the development of digital talent and citizen support, because together we can face the challenges arising from the digital gap”, said Grau.

The partnership between CaixaBank and MWCapital primarily involves collaboration in projects of interest to both organisations within the context of four specific areas: innovation, technology, talent, and society. Along these lines, CaixaBank plays an active, influential role as a leading institution in these areas.

CaixaBank, leader in innovation

Technology and digitisation play a key role in the bank’s business model, which has the largest digital customer base in Spain (10.4 million). CaixaBank has also developed projects that have set technological milestones in the sector, such as the creation of the first ATMs allowing withdrawals using facial recognition and without having to enter the PIN, a project chosen as one of the Technological Projects of the Year in the Tech Project Awards 2019 of The Banker magazine.

Thanks to its digital transformation strategy, CaixaBank is one of the most highly valued banks in the world for the quality of its digital products and services, with recognitions such as that of the “Best bank in the world in retail banking 2020” and “Best Bank in Spain 2020” by the US magazine Global Finance. Furthermore, this year it was awarded the title of “Most Innovative Bank in Western Europe 2021” by Global Finance, and “Best Private Bank in Big Data Analytics and AI in Europe 2021” by PMW (Financial Times Group). These awards are an addition to those obtained in the digital banking sector, such as the “Best digital bank in retail banking in Spain 2020”.
