How Cloud Computing is Redefining Modern Digital Systems

Cloud computing has evolved rapidly and is no longer just a tool for data storage or processing. Its integration with technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and serverless architectures has enabled unprecedented levels of flexibility and customisation

This shift was a major topic at Talent Arena 2025, where international experts shared their vision of how the cloud is redefining both technology and organisational structure, and its role in the future of digital systems.

The Role of Cloud Computing in Industrial IoT

Cloud computing has a direct impact on the evolution of industrial IoT, particularly in manufacturing and production environments. As Jordi Vallejo, Head of IoT Engineering at Inpixon, explained, combining cloud and sensors transforms simple asset tracking systems into intelligent platforms that integrate location, real-time data, and advanced processing capabilities

Key benefits of this integration include:

  • Managing large volumes of data from different sensors and technologies.
  • Automated or AI-assisted decision-making to improve production quality and speed.
  • Enhanced operator interaction through virtual assistants and natural language interfaces

This enables the creation of safer, smarter, and more efficient factories, where data becomes the engine for decision-making and risk reduction

The Cloud as an Organisational and Microservices Platform

Cloud computing not only transforms technological infrastructure but also requires rethinking internal organisation and how digital products are designed and delivered. It is no longer just about moving servers to virtual environments: the cloud drives distributed architectures, such as microservices and micro-frontends, allowing organisations to break down large systems into independent, scalable components

This approach allows teams to work more autonomously, innovate faster, and reduce deployment complexity. However, as Luca Mezzalira, Head of Serverless Solution Architecture at AWS, highlighted, the main challenge is not technological, but organisational

“You cannot design an architecture without considering the organisation: technology and teams go hand in hand.”

Team structure directly impacts system architecture. Therefore, successful cloud adoption requires stream-aligned teams that can deploy changes continuously and independently, maintaining an agile pace while staying aligned with business objectives.

Data Management as a Strategic Key

Technology alone does not guarantee success. As Miguel Guillot, Data and Analytics Solutions Architect at AWS, emphasised, many organisations fail not due to a lack of technical tools, but because they do not align their data strategies with business goals

Cloud computing enables the creation of decentralised, well-governed data communities focused on delivering real value. Guillot stressed the importance of starting with small, high-impact data products rather than attempting to “boil the ocean”.

This perspective highlights that the cloud’s value lies not only in computing or storage capacity, but in how organisations leverage it to foster collaboration, enhance data quality, and make decisions based on reliable, well-governed information.

The Cloud as an Ally of Modern Industry

Cloud computing has established itself as an essential technology for modern industry. Its integration with AI, IoT, and distributed architectures enables the creation of safer, more productive, and innovative environments

Key benefits:

  • Enhanced security: safer and more reliable work environments.
  • Increased productivity: optimised processes and faster decision-making through data integration
  • Continuous innovation: the ability to deploy new features and services quickly
  • Technology-business alignment: teams and processes aligned with organisational objectives

Moreover, this transformation impacts not only technology, but also organisational strategy and culture. Aligning technology and business, building teams suited to new working models, and establishing effective data governance are key to fully leveraging the cloud’s potential

In this context, the cloud becomes a strategic platform to drive innovation, competitiveness, and productivity in Industry 4.0
