The Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation (MWCapital), through its technology transfer program The Collider, has become Spain’s first and only member of the Deep Tech Alliance, Europe’s largest deep tech incubator network.
In each country, Deep Tech Alliance selects an incubator to support the european initiative to support deep tech startups with high impact potential with the international business opportunities and capital access they need to succeed.
Oscar Sala, director of MWCapital’s Innovation program, The Collider, stressed that “joining the alliance is a lever and a unique value proposition to connect our portfolio’s public science projects and startups with the European ecosystem, fostering a greater number of collaborations with international projects and partners”.
“The Collider is a great fit for DeepTech Alliance as they collaborate with both the leading technical universities and established industry in Spain and can thus connect new deep tech solutions with industrial implementation opportunities. We are excited to have them on board to represent the vibrant Spanish Deep tech ecosystem”, explains Thomas Klem Andersen, DeepTech Alliance Manager.
Acknowledging a successful public-private partnership model
Deep Tech Alliance selected MWCapital in Spain based on its extensive experience which includes the creation of spin-offs such as Deep Detection, Allread or Pharmacelera, as well as its alliance building capacity, especially in the scientific and corporate sectors.
Precisely the transfer between these two worlds is key for scientific environment generated technologies to enter the corporate sector. In this sense, The Collider features success stories such as Exheus, a one-of-a-kind in the world RNA test whose technology was developed by a Hospital Sant Pau and the University of Barcelona research team. In this instance, the transfer program connected the project with a CEO with a background in pharmaceutical and biotechnology project development – today, Exheus is the most sophisticated commercial RNA analysis technology in the world.
Entering the alliance will allow the Mobile World Capital Barcelona program to establish collaboration channels with the other 8 incubators in DeepTech Alliance, generating knowledge exchange, and take part in global corporate and startup matchmaking projects that will expand the outreach of the program’s own startups. Being part of the platform will also make it easier for the former to identify the needs of Spanish corporations and connect them with matching solutions from other Deep Tech Alliance ecosystems.
Deep tech, the search for great innovation
Deep tech is future oriented. It tries to anticipate the next great scientific innovations which have the potential to disrupt status quo and solve our global problems. In addition, thanks to its innovative nature, deep tech breaks into the market changing the way of operating and responding to technological and scientific challenges, thus becoming central to the advancement of scientific and technological knowledge in various sectors.
Deep technology startups will be key to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) -specially as far as health and well-being, industry, sustainable cities, responsible consumption and production and climate action are concerned.
