FAQs
We have five application criteria: (1) You must be a researcher or project team from a research institution in Spain (University, Researc/Tech Centre). Research teams can include PhD & Master Degree candidates. (2) Projects must be supported and endorsed by their respective institutions’ Technology Transfer Offices. (3) The technology submitted must be protected via an intellectual property right mechanism or be in the process of securing protection. (4) The technology must be at least TRL 3-4 (successful results in the lab). (5) The project team must be committed to bringing this technology to the market and impact society.
The call for technologies is open all year round and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The program operates in two cohorts that run parallel to one another. Participants have the option of joining the Spring (March-June) or Autumn (October-December) programme tracks. The first program, Opportunity Validation, has an approximate duration of 7 weeks. The second program, Business Validation, has an approximate duration of 3 months.
The application is done through a single form. All projects are evaluated upon receiving the application, and based on their current state and goals, the most suitable program is recommended. In most cases, projects start with the Opportunity Validation program before moving on to the Business Validation program. However, more advanced projects may qualify for a Fast-Track directly to Business Validation.
The first program, Opportunity Validation, has an approximate duration of 7 weeks and an approximate time commitment of 18 hours. The second program, Business Validation, has an approximate duration of 14 weeks and has an approximate time commitment of 60 hours.
International researchers or teams may apply as long as they are currently working in a Spanish research institution and have developed their technology in a Spanish research institution.
The program is constantly scouting for entrepreneurial profiles that are suitable for the upcoming cohort. However, once the project team has confirmed their need to incorporate an entrepreneur, a 1:1 session is conducted to define the exact needs of the project and define the requirements of the entrepreneurial profile they are looking for. Based on those needs, an offer is published briefly describing the project’s technology, its key challenges, the requirements and compensation involved (equity). Once candidates to that offer are evaluated, a few are selected and interviewed. First by the Talent Manager, and then again by the Talent Manager in conjunction with the project team. The project and potential entrepreneur profile are encouraged to meet on-site in lab facilities to get to know the technology firsthand. Once the project team confirms their preference for a candidate, the entrepreneur is asked to sign the Rules of Participation and their integration with the project team officially begins.
Once the Opportunity Validation program concludes, the project teams Ha the opportunity to present their technology in a relevant ecosystem event, such as the Barcelona Deep Tech Summit, where they receive relevant feedback from a panel of industry experts and can network with attendees. Based on the analysis carried out by The Collider team and relevant experts, as well as the project’s future plans and their technological roadmap, the program invites certain projects to carry onto the second program, Business Validation.
If the project accepts, they move on to the Team Creation phase and subsequently the Business Validation program. Once the Business Validation program is concluded, the project presents in front of the Investment Committee, which will determine whether the Mobile World Capital will act as first investor for the future deep-tech spin off.
Regardless of the outcome, once either program track is concluded, all projects become part of The Collider Community – gaining visibility and access to exclusive ecosystem events (Barcelona Mobile World Congress, 4YFN…), a community of scientific entrepreneurs, investors and more.
Both programs are free of charge. The services provided to the projects for the Opportunity Validation program are valued at 6.000€ per project. The services provided to the projects for the Business Validation program are valued at 22.000€ per project. In exchange for the Business Validation program services, The Collider retains a 4% in-kind participation/shareholding of the future deep-tech spin off. However, as public-private foundation, MWCapital’s aim is to eventually leave the shareholdings of the company to facilitate its growth.
